The coast of Walcheren, a former island, is known for having the highest number of sunshine hours in the Netherlands and is therefore also called the Zeeland Riviera.
Walcheren has a beach nearly 30 km long, stretching from Vlissingen to Vrouwenpolder. Halfway, at the western point, lies the quiet seaside resort of Westkapelle, an 800-year-old village of just over 2600 inhabitants, part of the municipality of Veere. The water quality at the nearby Erica beach has been consistently rated as excellent year after year, making it a major attraction for locals and vacationers.
In the village, there is a supermarket, a bakery, a butcher, a drugstore, a bicycle rental, souvenir shops, and numerous excellent restaurants. Due to the absence of a vibrant nightlife, Westkapelle is particularly suitable as a holiday destination for families with young children and older people. The location is also an ideal starting point for cyclists and nature lovers. Westkapelle is known for its lighthouse, which has been painted many times by Piet Mondriaan. The street where this vacation home is located is named after this world-famous Dutch painter.
The neighboring seaside resorts are Domburg, 5 km to the northeast, and Zoutelande, 4 km to the southeast of Westkapelle, both accessible via public road and the beach. The beach between Westkapelle and Domburg is popular with kite surfers and windsurfers. Both Middelburg, the centuries-old capital of Walcheren, and Vlissingen, an ancient port city, can be reached within 20 minutes by car.
